Reducing Elementary Students' Chronic Absenteeism: A Single Case Study
Dominique J. Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
The problem addressed is that elementary school teachers lack an effective and feasible intervention system to reduce chronic absenteeism, which can lead to low academic performance and other issues. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore elementary teachers' perceptions of how a multi-tiered system of support attendance program could effectively and feasibly reduce chronic absenteeism among elementary students. The study was framed by Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory and the multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework. Following approval from National University's Institutional Review Board and site permission, data were collected from 10 elementary teachers at one K-12 school in Northern California through interviews and questionnaires. Data were analyzed using NVivo to identify themes related to chronic absenteeism and the MTSS program. Findings indicated that the MTSS attendance program helped identify at-risk students, increase attendance rates, and improve academic performance, but barriers were identified, like inadequate training, workload issues, and lack of family engagement. Recommendations for practice included providing ongoing professional development, establishing clear procedures, promoting family collaboration, using data systems for progress monitoring, and advocating for resources to support MTSS implementation. Given the limitations of the current study, which focused on a single school site, future researchers could improve upon the current study by including a larger, more representative sample of schools. This study contributes to the literature regarding how to develop effective attendance interventions to address the widespread issue of chronic absenteeism in elementary schools. The findings could guide efforts to implement comprehensive, multi-tiered approaches tailored to the needs of students, families, and school communities.
