On June 24, 2022, the United States (U.S.) Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which has provided federal protection for safe and legal abortion access and care for 49 years in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. This decision gave states the power to enact some of the most restrictive abortion policies, resulting in 14 states, mainly in the southeastern region, impacting more than 25 million women of reproductive age. In 2019, Black women accounted for 38.4% of abortions. More than half of all unintended pregnancies in the U.S. can be attributed to young women in their twenties. In 2021, Black women comprised about 65% of all African American enrollments in higher education. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women enrolled in public health programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) located in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee -- states that have total abortion bans -- how the overturning Roe v. Wade may influence their future career in the public health field. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
