Encountering Difference: Navigating Belief, Identity, and Community in College
Krystal Ann Laryea
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Stanford University
How do people navigate institutional life together amid deep differences? Existing work highlights the mechanisms that drive and challenge exclusion and polarization, but these theories do not account for the moral frameworks, both implicit and explicit, that guide action. My dissertation brings tools from cultural and interactionist sociology to bear on this question, focusing on a key site where diversity is encountered: "college." Drawing on four years of fieldwork and 99 interviews with the members of two groups (a diverse community of evangelical Christians at a secular, private university and a progressive nonprofit that serves underrepresented minorities at a prestigious, public university), I theorize three strategies of action that people deploy to navigate personal identities and commitments in pluralistic spaces: breaking (foregoing former groups, identities and/or beliefs), "burrowing" (embedding in one group and foregoing others), and "bridging" (belonging to multiple, oppositional groups which requires reckoning with new beliefs while maintaining long-held belief anchors). I consider why people adopt these divergent strategies in college, which reveals the importance of two underlying processes: articulation and resonance.
