Pivoting from the Burnout Spiral: A Phenomenological Study Exploring the Effects of Burnout on Community College Counselors
Erika Hernandez
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, California Baptist University
Burnout has become a prevalent issue in workplace environments, significantly affecting individuals' mental, emotional, social, and physical well-being. This qualitative phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of burnout among community college counselors in Southern California, a group often overlooked in existing research. While burnout has been extensively studied in higher education, the focus has primarily been on students and university professionals, leaving a gap in understanding the challenges faced by community college counselors. The study investigates the specific stressors and impacts of burnout on counselors' professional and personal lives. Utilizing a dual-method approach, including Maslach's Burnout Inventory: Educators Survey (MBI-ES) and semi-structured interviews, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of burnout in this context. The findings of this research will contribute to professional development opportunities, provide suggestions for improved leadership and mentoring interventions, and tools to help combat and mitigate burnout. Additionally, this study highlights the importance of supporting counselor well-being to enhance their ability to provide high-quality student services. Recommendations include developing targeted interventions to improve counselors' mental and emotional health, creating policies that prioritize counselor well-being, and fostering supportive work environments. By addressing these concerns, the research aims to inform institutional leadership and contribute to the development of effective strategies for mitigating burnout among community college counselors, ultimately promoting student success and retention.
