Educational Psychology and Technology: Use of Mouse Pointer Toggles in Teaching Electronic Health Records
Damon E. Watkins Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
Electronic health records (EHRs) are essential databases that digitally collect, store, and exchange patient health information. Over 95% of hospitals have EHRs, yet healthcare professionals often struggle with EHR navigation, jeopardizing patient safety and care--consider a physician struggling to order blood for a hypovolemic patient. This pioneering study evaluates the mouse pointer toggle (MPT), an educational tool that highlights screen elements, to see if it enhances learning outcomes in EHR education. Forty-eight healthcare workers were randomly and equally distributed between a control group and an intervention group that viewed demonstrations using the MPT. Participants viewed and heard two demonstrations of how to click nine sequential buttons and then attempted to recreate the sequence. The primary outcome measured was the number of correct clicks in the sequence. A one-tailed independent samples t test compared between-group means. No significant difference was found between the control (M = 6.7, SD = 3) and intervention groups (M = 7.5, SD = 2.5), p = 0.174, d = 0.27, 95% CI [-0.84, 2.34], indicating that the MPT does not significantly improve procedural memory. However, exploratory analyses suggested participant age and sample size influenced the results. When corrected for age, outcomes rose to significance, p = 0.032. Future research should use a larger age-balanced sample to better assess the MPT's efficacy in EHR education.
