Foundations in Understanding NACURH: Training Regional-Level Advisors in a Professional Learning Community
Jamie M. Lloyd
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Arizona State University
Compared to advising on college campuses, advising students in a national nonprofit organization presents distinct and understudied challenges that require targeted approaches. This action research qualitative study was conducted to address the need for regional-level advisors volunteering in the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH) to receive training specific to their role and to the needs of advising in a nonprofit organization led entirely by college student leaders. Advisors often receive training for campus student organization advisor roles but receive limited training to advise a group of students in this organization. This study used the theoretical frameworks of professional learning communities (PLCs) and adult learning theory to develop a four-part training series attended by regional-level advisors. The findings of this study suggest that implementing a professional learning community and presenting applicable training sessions positively impacted advisor development and engagement in their roles.
