Transformational Leadership Behaviors of Chief Information Officers during the Implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems

The purpose of this quantitative correlational associative study was to determine if and to what extent there was a relationship between the transformational leadership behaviors of CIOs, as perceived by IT employees, and a successful ERP system implementation in higher education in the United States. This study used the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the ERP system success model. The research questions were designed to examine the relationship between transformational leadership style, its four dimensions and a successful ERP system implementation in higher education. Spearman correlations were performed instead of Pearson correlations because the assumption of normality was violated. The findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between a successful ERP system implementation and transformational leadership behaviors, [rho](142) = 0.56, p < 0.001, idealized influence, [rho](142) = 0.50, p < 0.001, inspirational motivation, [rho](142) = 0.54, p < 0.001, intellectual stimulation, [rho](142) = 0.43, p < 0.001, and individualized consideration, [rho](142) = 0.53, p < 0.001). Therefore, the null hypotheses were rejected, and the alternative hypotheses were supported: there is a significant relationship between transformational leadership behaviors and a successful ERP system implementation.
