Resilient Christian Higher Education Change Agents: A Multi-Case Study
Andrew Martin Yates
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Christian higher education has always been a developing enterprise, and leaders predict an unprecedented rate of change in the near future. Such scale of change poses an existential threat to modern Christian higher education efforts, heightening the value of crisis leadership and related competencies. These institutions and the leaders who guide them benefit from continued investigation into the most impactful, sustainable examples of change agents as they seek to thrive through forecasted seasons of change. Recent circumstances involving intense change leadership provide opportunities for highlighting resilience-strengthening assets, especially helpful for leaders facing increasingly dynamic change. This multi-case study identifies such a profile of a resilient change agent operating within Christian higher education. Findings indicate that exemplary models of resilience among Christian higher education change agents diverge significantly from the most popular resilience-enhancing assets predicted in the literature. Most notably, resilient change agents within these institutions place little confidence in their own capacity to successfully navigate change. Rather, their hope is in the Trinitarian God, they are committed to like-minded faith communities, and they devote themselves daily to a cohesively Christian worldview through intentional disciplines.
