ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, McKendree University
Due to the growing number of students enrolling as homeless in American public schools, a quantitative design was applied to determine if students in an Illinois suburban, kindergarten through eighth grade school district (District A), who are enrolled under the McKinney-Vento Act and are receiving resources of food, shelter, clothing, and transportation have higher attendance rates than those students who are enrolled under the McKinney-Vento Act and are not receiving the resources. The theoretical framework for this research was Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The research showed there was a significant difference in attendance rates for all students who were receiving any resource, physiological resources, and transportation versus those who were not and between the attendance rates of students receiving resources and not receiving resources based on their race in each category. There was not a significant difference based on age, sex or attending school. The hypothesis was validated for students receiving resources, physiological resources, transportation resources and race. The hypothesis was not validated for age, sex, or attending school.
