School Counselors' Perceptions of Self-Efficacy in Crisis Counseling: A Generic Qualitative Study
Kelly A. Warner
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This generic qualitative inquiry aims to understand the lived experience of school counselors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research question asks how school counselors describe their perceptions of crisis self-efficacy in their work with students and families during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This study utilized the step-by-step guide to a generic qualitative study laid out by Kostere and Kostere (2022). Certified public-school counselors in Texas were the participants in this study. Fourteen certified public-school counselors who met all inclusion criteria were interviewed in a virtual, confidential interview. Data from participant interviews was analyzed using a qualitative computer software program, Quirkos. From the analysis, four major themes emerged: Shift in Counseling Responsibilities, Emotional Impact of Personal Experiences to the COVID-19 Crisis, and Impact of Crisis Training on Efficacy. These three themes helped to answer the research question, "How do school counselors describe their perceived self-efficacy in crisis counseling during the COVID-19 Pandemic?" The findings in this study suggest that professional school counselors may not have felt prepared to counsel during the COVID-19 Pandemic; however, they felt effective in the crisis counseling services provided to students during that time. Findings from this study can be used to guide counselor educators in creating more in-depth crisis counseling curricula, specifically related to counseling during a pandemic in a public-school setting. Future research in regard to crisis counseling and school counselors can include both elementary and secondary school counselors. Additionally, future research related to crisis counseling and school counselors can include school counselors from across the United States.
