A Generic Qualitative Study of School Counselors' Supervision Experiences during Practicum and Internship
Lakeshia Doctor
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to investigate novice school counselors' experiences of on-site supervision during practicum and internship in their graduate programs. The main objective was to understand the supervision process for school counselors-in-training (SCIT), which needs to be more well-defined and studied compared to other counseling professions. The research question in this study was: How do school counselors describe their experiences of on-site supervision during practicum and internship in their graduate program? Generic qualitative research was the methodology used in the study, and the researcher obtained reflective experiences from the participants through semi-structured interviews. Participants for the study were selected with the inclusion criteria of being K-12 licensed school counselors, employed in public schools (elementary, middle, or high) in the United States, with a Master's degree in school counseling, and having less than five years of experience as a school counselor. Ten participants from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) membership completed the interviews. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) was used to analyze data using hand coding. The researcher uploaded each transcript into a qualitative research platform (Delve, 2023) to confirm and validate themes and subthemes. Four themes and ten subthemes emerged from the data. The four themes are the following: (a) my relationship with my supervisor impacted my satisfaction with my supervisory experience, (b) my site supervisor engaged in specific actions that promoted my skill attainment and preparedness, (c) my site supervisor inspired my professional identity, and (d) my site supervisor abandoned me. The findings support previous studies on the supervision experiences of SCIT and endorse the impact of the supervision experience, which needs to be documented in the research. Implications for SCIT, proceeding-site supervisors, and counselor education and training programs are offered. Further research is recommended on on-site supervisor training and experience to gain a better understanding of the supervision process for SCIT.
