Feminism has re-emerged as important and even influential discourse among women, including within higher education. Public support by prominent women has brought an upgraded version of feminism into the mainstream. This version of "neoliberal feminism" however, overlooks the challenges faced by many first-generation, undergraduate women, particularly regarding their socioeconomic status as they navigate career choices. The broader culture is conditioned to ignore these economic structures. In turn, many females blame themselves for not attaining an "Instagram-worthy" balance between work and home life. Crucially, this version of feminism relies on the same silent historical exploitation of marginalized women. Given the swirling messages surrounding this new feminism in popular culture, this study examines how five first-generation, female undergraduates at West Lake University, a public institution in the northern United States, as they narrate their career decision-making processes. Many come from low-income backgrounds and lack financial support. Despite these challenges, they are making significant investments in their higher education and preparing to launch their careers. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using a phenomenology approach. The findings provide valuable insights for college administrators seeking to understand how first-generation undergraduate women make career decisions.
