Design Thinking Leadership and Its Effects on Organizational Culture in Higher Education
Cesar A. Santalo
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, St. Thomas University
As higher education faces challenges in low enrollment, soaring prices, and individuals who question the need for a degree, these institutions must transform into flexible-minded and innovative centers of excellence. The purpose of this study is to explore how empathetic and collaborative practices inherent in design thinking methodologies can contribute to the transformation of organizational cultures in colleges and universities, enabling them to better serve, recruit, and retain students. Qualitative research methods are used to investigate the experiences of higher education leaders who have implemented design thinking in their institutions using in-depth interviews, thematic analysis, and case studies of approximately five to ten leaders in higher education. Several conclusions emerged from the data analysis, including the importance of creativity and user experience data from students, faculty, and parents. Also important is the attitude of organizational culture towards increased agility and responsiveness to customer needs.
