Improving Christian Ministers' Coping Skills through Professional Development: A Qualitative Descriptive Study
Oluwafemi Oluwalana
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
The spiritual environment in America has transformed due to demographic shifts, disaffiliation, and political polarization, forcing religious organizations and ministers to adapt their practices. Ministers often face challenges as a result of inadequate training and a lack of preparedness for complex ministry demands, leading to burnout and turnover. The problem addressed in this study is that Christian ministers, in the absence of quality professional development, are often left unprepared to cope with complex ministry issues that impact church operations, retention of parishioners, and their spiritual duties. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to capture the perspectives of Christian ministers regarding the types of quality professional development needed to assist them in developing effective coping skills to address complex ministry issues that impact church operations, retention of parishioners, and their spiritual duties. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to obtain a sample of 13 ministers from Maryland. Participants, recruited via publicly available contact information in accordance with the National University Institutional Review Board guidelines, took part in 45-50-minute interviews. Data were deidentified and transcribed using NVivo. Findings indicated that coping strategies, professional development, and integrating spiritual practices with practical skills are essential for their well-being and effectiveness. Also, a holistic approach to ministerial training that combines spiritual formation with emotional and leadership skills is necessary, as well as enhanced curricula and support systems. Future research should employ mixed-methods, longitudinal, and comparative studies with larger, diverse samples and objective measures to understand better how to support ministers' coping skills and professional development needs. Church leadership and stakeholders must prioritize and support ministers' professional growth to provide them with the coping skills and practical competencies required to thrive in their vital societal roles.
