Promoting Principal Mental Health: Strategies and Recommendations for Principal Wellness
Meghan Watelet
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Pittsburgh
The position of a school building administrator is overwhelming with multiple responsibilities, long hours, and job pressures. Due to these factors, there is a negative impact on mental health and a high rate of burnout for administrators. This study reviews the factors that contribute to negative mental health and administrator burnout, and research-based practices to help improve the role of a school building administrator. This study interviewed ten school building administrators from a large suburban school district outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The interviews gathered qualitative data that focuses on the topics of mental health, job appreciation, work and life boundaries, COVID-19, and continuing education trainings and programs. These data were then used to create recommendations for a superintendent to improve administrator job demands and responsibilities, and in turn improve mental health. These recommendations are intended to improve mental health and prevent administrator burnout. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
