Teacher Preparation Programs and the Skills New Teachers Need to Be Prepared for the Classroom
Bobbie Smith
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
Teacher attrition has had a large impact on school success due to the high number of teachers leaving the field of education. Many teachers experience burnout and low job satisfaction, which ultimately drives them to leave the field. This research study focused on the problem of teachers not receiving adequate training in social-emotional competence and behavior in their teacher preparation program. The study investigated K-12 teachers' perceptions of the training they received regarding social-emotional competence and its impact on teacher attrition. The theory of constructivism is the belief that individuals construct knowledge and understanding through experience and reflection and was used as the study's theoretical framework. The qualitative descriptive case study included a sample size of 12 teachers who teach or have taught in K-12 schools in the U.S. All of the participants completed an online survey via social media, and six of those participants elected to engage in a virtual interview to go into further depth of their responses. After collecting all surveys and interviews, they were transcribed and analyzed using an Excel document. The results of the survey demonstrated that most K-12 teachers did not receive a lot of training in behavior and social-emotional competence in their teacher preparation program and wanted more. They also wanted more hands-on and real-world experiences in their program. The implications of the findings suggest that teacher preparation programs provide more training in social-emotional competence and behavior with real-world experiences. Future researchers should use a larger population to gather more robust responses. The study contributes to the practice of education by providing teacher preparation programs, the perceptions teachers have regarding their training, and additional training that may be beneficial to decrease teacher attrition.
