Professional development looks to improve professional practices of education and to enhance the quality of programs in education settings. Researchers and practitioners study coaching as one of the professional development strategies to support learning processes and improve instruction, interactions, and overall development of teachers and children. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions that administrators and lead counselors of an out-of-school program have on the implementation process of the Practice-Based Coaching (PBC) model in youth programs and how PCB may influence their job quality after participating in six sessions of coaching. The National Center on Quality Teaching and Learnings (NCQTL) studied PCB and the Head Start program implemented it extensively at the national level in formal school-time programs. The study used a qualitative research framework with a structured interview methodology using a non-probabilistic convenience sample. Subjects participated based on their availability and willingness. The study processed the collected data using content analysis to explore how participants describe their experiences before and after the coaching intervention; and how different or similar are the experiences of administrators and lead counselors after participating in the PCB coaching intervention. This study adds to the body of research on coaching implementation in out-of-school settings. It supports coaching as a tool for developing professionals in non-traditional school environments.
