A Case for Sense of Belonging Theory in the College Recruitment of Black Men
Ramon A. Blakley
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, The University of Texas at Austin
Black male college enrollment is at concerning and acutely low numbers compared to other groups; this is especially challenging at Historically White Colleges and Universities (HWCUs), where Black men often face hostility and ostracism on campus and during college recruitment and admissions. This study aims to amplify the voices of Black male admission professionals at HWCUs as they strive to recruit Black male students. This qualitative, phenomenological, constructivist study used interviews to understand how nine Black male college admission professionals at HWCUs describe their experiences recruiting Black male students. My findings revealed three core themes describing the lived experience of Black male admissions professionals and their recruitment of Black male students: (a) the value of representation, (b) belonging as a concern for professionals and students, and (c) unconventional approaches to recruitment.
