Haitian Students' Descriptions of Their Experiences in a College Developmental Writing Class
Wayne Anthony
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study was conducted to specifically analyze the experiences of Haitian students during their college developmental education writing classes. The rationale was to fill the gap with scientific knowledge about better ways to help developmental education writing students since there is a need to improve their success rate. The following research questions drew answers that were included in the findings: What are Haitian students' perceptions of their involvement in a college developmental writing class and how did they describe their experiences in a developmental writing course? Haitian students were exceptionally studied so that more focused teaching strategies could be developed to bolster the academic achievement of these students and potentially other second-language students who are required to complete college developmental education writing courses. Additionally, to further determine the most appropriate strategies for this group of students, the researcher sought to understand their perceptions of developmental education writing courses and to use such information to either maintain or influence a more positive mindset. Andragogy, social development theory, and ZDP were used as the theoretical foundation along with the basic qualitative approach to constitute the study design. The sample was comprised of nine Haitian students from whom data was collected by way of a series of semi-structured interviews. After organizing and coding the data, five recurring themes were identified. From the findings, it was deduced that Haitian students believe that developmental education writing courses are essential foundational courses for those who lack the skills they provide. Also, Haitian students are conditioned by their parents to withstand challenges related to their academic quest. The findings derived here should be considered when completing the curriculum for a college developmental writing course so that instructors and other stakeholders can appropriately assist similar students.
