A Phenomenological Exploration of African American Single Mother's Perception of Managing Well-Being and Coping during the Onset of COVID-19
Tinnie Gant Simmons
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Arizona Global Campus
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore African American single mothers' lived experiences of managing their children's remote learning and physical activities during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order as they managed and coped during this unprecedented time. There are limited published peer-reviewed articles about African American single mothers' perception of COVID-19 restrictions on their lived experiences. Therefore, additional research is needed to address the gap in equitable healthcare disparities to combat social risk factors related to the lived experiences of African American single mothers as they are the sole providers of managing their children's remote learning and physical activities. Combining McLeroy's ecological model framed by Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological model and recent research provides a lens for understanding eight African American single mothers' lived experience before and during the COVID-19 restrictions with an overall positive attitude. The findings from the study could inform educators, school administrators, and policymakers who seek to mitigate problems from the impact of the shelter-in-place restrictions on African American single mothers. Furthermore, the findings could support other single mothers struggling with work and home life balance. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
