A Description of Secondary School Administrators Professional Learning and Productive Partnerships in Special Education

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how secondary school administrators describe their professional learning and productive partnerships in special education to lead in inclusive schools in public schools in the Northeast Region of the United States. The conceptual framework for this study is the Star Model developed by Crockett which covers five core principles (a) ethical practice, (b) individual consideration, (c) effective programming, (d) productive partnerships, and (e) equity under. Two research questions guided the study: (1) How do school administrators describe their professional learning in special education to lead in inclusive schools? (2) How do school administrators describe their established productive partnerships to lead in inclusive schools? The study sample was made up of 12 school administrators from public middle schools and high schools. Data collection instruments consisted of a semi-structured interview and a focus group. Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data generating four themes: (1) Utilized Sources of professional learning to enhance special education knowledge and skill, (2) Motivation in choosing professional learning topics to enhance special education knowledge and skill, (3) Challenges in seeking professional learning in special education limits opportunities to enhance special education knowledge and skill, and (4) Majority of Productive Partnerships are established with Other Administrators and Special Education Experts while Limited Productive Partnerships are established with Parents and Related Services Staff. The results of this study contribute to the body of literature by providing insightful guidance to school administrators' current practices to help improve and enhance their leadership in special education.
