Possessing and Maintaining a Place among Leaders: A Mixed Methods Study of the Underrepresentation of Women of Color in Leadership Roles in K-12 Education
Jah-Chant R. Robinson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Point Park University
This research intends to test the practice that Women of Color, or women who identify as a race other than white, do not receive fair and adequate opportunities to ascend to leadership roles. More specifically, Women of Color do not receive equitable opportunities in administrative positions in the K-12 educational system. Within this study, research will compare Women of Color to individuals currently occupying educational leadership positions in K-12 Administration. Subjects of the research are specifically Women of Color in academic leadership roles at Allegheny County public, non-charter schools in Pennsylvania. With such a small number of Women of Color serving in leadership roles in the K-12 education system, many have called for more representative leadership. Women of Color must achieve degrees and accolades to be administrators, but there are a variety of barriers to this achievement for Women of Color, therefore causing a disconnect in the system. The result is an inaccurate representation of the number of qualified Women of Color in Allegheny County school districts. The purpose of this research is to identify those barriers and provide insights from those who have held or currently hold these positions. In turn, research will provide support and resources that can assist others in their pursuits. Women of Color, identifying as a race other than white can be change agents in education once the system becomes reconstructed to support their acceptance, growth, and development as leaders. The current educational leaders are what society defines as leaders. The control and intervening variable(s) are current leaders who meet societal norms, and schools that have Women of Color in leadership roles promote the initiative to promote change in the representation of leaders in schools in Allegheny County.
