Texas Teachers' Perceptions of Classroom and School Campus Safety
LaKeysha Lowery
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
An awareness of empirical data that explores modern views of school and classroom safety from the perspective of Texas teachers actively involved in today's classrooms is essential for establishing an unabridged deterrent to indecent acts and school violence on today's K-12 campuses. An investigation into the views of Texas educators regarding school campus and classroom safety is approached using the heuristic ecological model depicting school safety and opportunity structures. Convenience sampling is utilized in the single-case qualitative study to present a semi-structured asynchronous interview to active Texas teachers in the Houston, Texas area. The research analyzed 11 respondents from 6 school districts in the Houston area, and the respondents' teaching experiences ranged from 3 to 23 years of teaching experience in Texas schools. A narrative analysis is used to analyze responses. Using narrative analysis, the research found that the Texas teachers surveyed demonstrated a high recognition of safety, safety drills, and safety concerns on their perspective campuses and classrooms. However, of the Texas teachers surveyed, 91% of the respondents mentioned a need for a better support system, mainly derived from their administrators, to address disciplinary actions on indecent or violent acts. 82% of those surveyed provided a solution to better school safety that includes a collaborative effort involving administrators, students, parents, and the communities they serve. Lastly, 72% of respondents favor in-classroom video surveillance to deter indecent or violent acts, with concerns about how in-classroom cameras may be used to micromanage teachers by administrators.
