Ana Patricia Quiroz
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Limited research currently exists on the lived experiences of Latina/o students with dis/abilities within secondary and postsecondary education. While the number of Latina/o students with dis/abilities enrolling in college has continued to rise, their graduation rates are still lower than those of their counterparts without dis/abilities. Furthermore, little research has been completed that focuses on the lived experiences, barriers, and resources needed to successfully graduate. This qualitative study sought to have a better understanding of the lived experiences of Latina/o students with dis/abilities in high school and college. The key themes from the findings included Intersecting Identities, Impact of High School Experiences, and Impact of College Experiences. The findings of this study can assist professionals who work with students with dis/abilities in gaining a better understanding of the barriers Latina/o students with dis/abilities face within their educational journey as well as the resources and support that can aid in removing those barriers and crossing the finish line of graduation.
