High School Choir Teachers' Perceptions of Music Education Students' Undergraduate College Readiness Characteristics
Dana Anne Boylan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilkes University
This study sought to understand the skills and qualities a student needs to be successful in a music education career from a high school choral teacher's perspective. Pre-service music teachers must be prepared to teach and organize a music classroom in any K-12 setting when graduating college with a music education degree (Franzblau, 2013). Currently, there is a high attrition rate of music education students in an undergraduate degree (NCES, 2021). Review of the literature identified a gap in research specifically examining what skills and qualities college music education students are missing if they are not successful in graduating from a college program (Franzblau, 2013; Wilkinson & Rush, 2017). There are gaps in the literature regarding music education major readiness and a college graduation rate (Gavin, 2012). No specific studies highlight the skills a music education major needs to succeed as a music teacher in a K-12 education setting from a high school choir teacher's perspective. The theoretical construct of this qualitative, phenomenological research is social constructivism (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Social constructivism has framed this study using interview questions based on the constructivist theory of active learner reorganization (Fosnot, 2005). Constructivism in this context looked at the skills and qualities of students that are either musical or non-musical from a high school choir teacher's perspective (Fosnot, 2005). Constructivism from a learning standpoint is not linear; it is complex and ever-changing for each individual student (Fosnot, 2005). This study used in-person and online interviews to collect data which revealed a high school choir teacher's educational journey and the perspectives they hold on current music education major college readiness based on his or her college and music teaching experiences.
