Louis L. Cook
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Jackson State University
This dissertation examined factors affecting the college choice of African American male undergraduate students at two private liberal arts colleges in the South. The study explored African American male undergraduate students experiences, perceptions, and attitudes toward the college selection process, using Hossler and Gallagher (1987) College Choice Model as the theoretical framework. Research questions focused on how predisposition, search, and choice factors affect college choice for African American undergraduate males at private liberal arts colleges in the South. The study employed a qualitative methodology, with data collected through in-depth interviews with 20 participants. Study finding indicated that family and community influences, financial considerations, campus environment, and diversity were factors in college choice. The study significance lies in its potential to advance understanding of factors affecting college choice for African American undergraduate males at private liberal arts colleges in the South and to inform development of policies and practices promoting greater access, diversity, and educational equity within higher education institutions.
