An Analysis of Tuition Discounting at Colleges and Universities
Larry Barker
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Jackson State University
Tuition discounting has been a long-standing practice among colleges and universities. Its roots can be traced to the beginnings of the 1970s, and its use has continued to increase and expand in the decades following. However, despite its widespread use, the research is inconclusive whether tuition discounting has been an effective strategy to generate tuition revenue or manage enrollment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between tuition discounting and institutional factors such as net tuition revenue, institutional net income, enrollment, minority enrollment, and student ACT scores for public and private non-profit colleges and universities in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi following the 2008 economic crisis. The data utilized for the study was collected from the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistic's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). This research study examined 29 private and public, primarily bachelor's degree granting institutions with small to medium Carnegie enrollment classifications. The findings in this study established that there was a significant, strong, linear relationship between tuition discounting and the variables of net tuition revenue and student enrollment for the research group. The study also analyzed other factors associated with the practice of tuition discounting. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
