The Impact of Motivations and Organizational Ethos on Foundation Giving to Small Colleges and Universities
Sunya Young-Dewese
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Jackson State University
The study explored the impact of motivations and organizational ethos on foundation giving to small colleges and universities seeking to enhance funding streams and educational opportunities within these institutions. Employing a qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with former foundation executives to delve into their perspectives, experiences, and decision-making processes. This study was guided by the Rockefeller Foundation's Philanthropy Framework. Key findings reveal that intrinsic motivations and strong organizational culture positively influence foundation giving. In particular, donors motivated by institutional missions and values were more likely to contribute substantially, while organizations emphasizing transparency, ethical norms, trust, and a common purpose received greater donations. Effective donor engagement strategies, like personalized communication and recognition events, further encouraged sustained support. Additionally, the formation of strategic partnerships with other entities, such as corporations and community foundations, emerged as a method to enhance funding opportunities. These findings align closely with the literature review, which traces the history and diverse motivations of philanthropy in higher education, underscoring the importance of understanding and nurturing intrinsic motivations and fostering a values-oriented organizational culture. Recommendations include investing in robust donor engagement strategies, proactively seeking strategic partnerships, and fostering a strong organizational ethos to boost philanthropic contributions. The study contributes to the wider discourse on educational philanthropy and offers practical recommendations for small colleges and universities looking to bolster their fundraising initiatives.
