An Evaluation of an Individualized Education Plan Checklist as an Antecedent Intervention to Train Administrators in IEP Compliance

The study examines how Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) principles, a subspecialty of applied behavior analysis (ABA), can be applied to improve the evaluation and compliance of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by school administrators. Three administrators from public school districts participated in the study, which utilized a nonconcurrent, multiple-probe across-participants design. The study developed an antecedent checklist as an OBM strategy to guide administrators in systematically reviewing IEPs, aiming to enhance their skills in evaluating IEPs and ensuring compliance with legal requirements. All participants achieved the mastery criterion of 80% or higher within three presentations of IEPs, indicating the checklist's efficiency as a training tool. The findings suggest that the antecedent checklist effectively enhances administrators' skills in evaluating IEPs and promoting consistent implementation across the district. The study highlights the checklist's potential for improving IEP quality, fostering data-driven practices, collaboration, and family engagement in the IEP process. It addresses the gap in proper training for administrators in evaluating IEPs and ensuring legal defensibility. Future research should explore long-term maintenance, broader applications, and the impact on student outcomes to further validate the effectiveness of this OBM intervention.
