L.O.V.E. Model: Sex Redefined, an Adult Sex Education Program for Mental Health Professionals in Graduate Degree Programs Pursuing Clinical Licensure
Latrice Lashae Love
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Capella University
There is a need to provide mental health professionals in training education related to sexual health from both a medical model and through the lens of an expanded definition of sexual health, which includes but is not limited to sexuality, sex concerns, sexual intimacy, sexual frequency, and other sex topics beyond a sexual medical health model that focuses primarily on reproduction and disease prevention. In response to this need, creating a training program that addresses expanded issues of sexual health is proposed through this program design to address the lack of self-efficacy and comfort needed to address sexual concerns in an unbiased manner for future licensed clinicians. This clinical program design development addresses identified competency concerns by training mental health professionals before entering the field by allowing mental health students to address their personal biases in a safe environment and be exposed to sex topics on a deeper level that goes beyond the surface of the sex topics they may have been exposed to in their backgrounds and previous academic experiences. This program design consists of outcome measures designed to capture sexual attitudes through assessment and reassessment to assist future therapists in determining where they could benefit from adding more training in the future, identifying personal judgments that may need to be challenged, and potentially shifting attitudes to reduce stigma before it exaggerates this existing problem. This program provides a phenomenological experience designed to assist future mental health providers with making informed decisions for patient care with reduced judgment, insightful, collaborative care, and referral based on need instead of fear or lack of competence. The objective of this dissertation is to create a novel program that equips clinicians with tools applicable across the field of psychology and various mental health domains. This program seeks to promote holistic and culturally competent care for patients/clients, addressing their diverse needs.
