Leveraging International Student Experiences in Building Academic & Community Support Programs at the University of Akron
Andrew Gerald Kramer
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Dayton
The research presented here was completed in partial fulfillment for the doctorate in education degree for the University of Dayton school of Education and Health Sciences. This research identified a problem in practice at the University of Akron of declining international student enrollment, sense of satisfaction, and feelings of institutional support. As part of this research a theoretical framework based on promoting equity was created to guide the research methodology. This research seeks to align university support structures with their organizational mission of providing equitable access to education. Further, this research seeks to utilize the LOVE Change model to bring international students as relevant stakeholders into organizational change processes. A total of fifty international students were surveyed about their academic, cultural, and legal needs. Six students were selected from the original participants to conduct semi-structured interviews to gain more insight into needs illuminated by the prior survey. The survey results indicated a high need among international students for academic tutoring, cultural events, career planning and legal services involving assistance with immigration. The interviews brought forth themes of uncertainty and anxiety, lack of knowledge, want of career guidance, and want of educational guidance among international students. The final phase of this research was the development of an actionable plan to change organizational service structures offered by the International Center at the University of Akron. The proposed action plan would create a recursive and cyclic process by which organizational service structures are developed from the embodied data and lived experiences of the international student community. The research adds to a growing body of knowledge regarding the relationship between organizational service structures, change processes, non-government organizations, and building equity through data collection interpretation.
