The Community College as an Engine of Local Economic Growth: An Exploration of Educational Needs of Entrepreneurs Post-Pandemic
Yolanda L. Whidbee
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This cross-sectional qualitative study was designed to examine the educational and professional development needs of existing entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship students in educational and professional development in Gloucester and Cumberland Counties in Southern New Jersey. The organization that sponsored the study, the Division of Business Studies of Rowan College of South Jersey, became the first community college in Southern New Jersey to offer a specialized degree in Entrepreneurship. Despite the creation of the new program, the Division of Business Studies had limited information on the needs of existing and potential Entrepreneurs, as well as the best strategy to aid the college in fulfilling those needs. For this study, there were a total of 12 participants, which included a cross section of 7 existing entrepreneurs and 5 entrepreneurship students from both Gloucester and Cumberland Counties. According to the findings, possessing strong social skills, having a mentor and in-person learning are key components for the success of entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs in Cumberland and Gloucester Counties. As a result, these findings will aid the sponsoring organization in their efforts to provide existing and potential entrepreneurs with the curriculum, instruction, programming, resources and skills needed to advance their careers in entrepreneurship. There were several recommendations presented to the sponsoring organization. Additionally, throughout the exploration of this study, various areas of future research were identified; those areas include exploring the current needs of Entrepreneurs, trends of Entrepreneurship Education in Community Colleges versus Four-Year Institutions and the role of Artificial Intelligence in the future of Entrepreneurship.
