Pressures Faced by Student-Athletes at Division 2 Institutions: Coping Strategies Utilized and Desired
Karlie M. Garcia
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
Student-athletes at Division 2 institutions may have pressure from athletics and academics that affect their overall wellness. The purpose of this study is to identify pressures Division 2 student-athletes face and the coping strategies present and desired to help mitigate pressures. The research questions are 1) What pressures do student-athletes identify at Division 2 institutions? (2) How do institutions help student-athletes manage pressure? Participants on the Men's and Women's cross country teams ranged from 18-23 years old student-athletes and were enrolled at a Division 2 institution between 2023-2025. A detailed questionnaire was given to the participants regarding mental health, pressures and coping strategies present and desired. Findings indicated anxiety and depression as mental health struggles. Pressures from sport to be most common among the group. Coping strategies utilized were talking with a teammate/parent or a recreational hobby. The most desired coping strategies were to have easier access to resources (e.g., therapy, organized outlets, nutrition support). The limitations were the limited sample size, geographic region, and sport diversity. The recommendations include further research on Division 2 student-athletes' well-being and implementation of more resources for student-athletes to help mitigate the athletic pressures they feel, similar to Division 1 institutions.
