Persistence and Retention of First-Generation College Students through COVID-19
Edie Louise Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Fresno
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected higher education, particularly impacting first generation college students (FGCS). This qualitative case study, framed by the Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity (MMDI), aimed to identify factors that influenced the retention and persistence of FGCS during the pandemic. By examining FGCS experiences through semi-structured interviews, this study provided insights into the support measures and areas of identity that affected their educational journey to find academic success. Additionally, it addresses gaps in the existing literature related to FGCS, particularly to persist when facing more than typical external barriers to higher education leading to considerations for higher education leaders and recommendations for future research.
