ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This qualitative study delved into the lived experiences of individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). Specifically, the study investigated encounters with racial microaggressions among BIPOC counselor education faculty and doctoral students through a qualitative research approach. The research question was, "How do BIPOC counselor education faculty and doctoral students articulate their encounters with racial microaggressions in academia?" To investigate this, 14 BIPOC counselor education faculty and doctoral students within CACREP-accredited programs were chosen using criterion and snowball sampling techniques. Semi-structured interviews were carried out utilizing targeted questions, and the data were subsequently analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis method. The analysis revealed several key themes: challenges to credibility, difficulties in navigating academic systems, experiences of tokenism, and utilizing support to develop resiliency and perseverance. The study's findings have important implications for practice, highlight the study's limitations, and offer recommendations for future research.
