A Case Study on Perfusion Technology Factors Influencing the Success on the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Exam

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Point Park University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to provide an initial analysis of variables including academic courses, demographics, and clinical experience used as predictive measures of board certification achievement. With the growing need for perfusionists due to an increase in cardiac procedures and retirement, first-time pass rate on board certification is imperative to fill the growing vacancy within the clinical setting. This study will help program administrators understand variables that best predict success and identify the weight each factor should hold in the admission process. This study aimed to examine previously collected data related to the preadmission variables of Carlow University- UPMC perfusion program students from 2017-2022. For the purpose of this case study, student-level data was pulled, and success on the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) exam was identified to further suggest variables that predict first-time pass rates. Data was entered into SPSS to collect descriptive statistics. A binary logistic regression was used to predict the probability of a dependent variable based on multiple independent variables. The findings of this study revealed that two perfusion courses and one applicant factor had a positive impact on the ABCP exam outcome. This quantitative study allowed the researcher to understand more about the variables that effect the first-time pass rate on the ABCP exam.
