Hong Kong School Social Workers: Understanding Their Roles, Workload, and Job Satisfaction after COVID-19

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
School social workers play the main role in the Hong Kong local school mental health system. Recent research has indicated that Hong Kong school social workers experience burnouts with long working hours. Moreover, the two years of remote learning due to COVID-19 had a significant impact on Hong Kong students, affecting their academic performance, mental health, and social lives. This added a greater challenge to the heavy workload of school social workers. The current study, employing a qualitative approach, aimed to investigate ways to provide supports for school social workers by understanding components contributing to their job satisfaction. The results yielded two main themes: a) school social workers need more counseling training for complicated cases, and b) the roles of school social workers and counselors must be clarified for public understanding. Fulfillment of these two components could subsequently lead to a better work-life balance for school social workers. Nonetheless, due to the qualitative nature of this research, future direction may consider conducting a quantitative study with reference to these research data.
