Counseling Faculty Describe Their Sense of Community at a Faith Based Institute
Claudia Seth
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to understand how do counseling faculty describe the role of integrating religion and spirituality to foster a sense of community in their online classes at a faith-based higher education institution in the United States. The Sense of Community framework developed by McMinn and Chavis was the theoretical foundation for the study. The two research questions in this study asked how counseling faculty describe the role of integrating religion and spirituality to foster a sense of community in the online classes at a faith-based higher education institution. The study used a qualitative methodology that included two data sources: 34 online questionnaires and 17 semi-structured interviews. A purposeful sampling and snowballing approach were used to recruit participants for this study. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis was used during the data analysis process. Four themes were developed from this present study: (a) Having a safe environment to freely integrate religion, (b) Counseling faculty presence in the online learning environment, (c) Providing a holistic approach for online learning (d) Growth as counselors in training (CIT). The findings from the study revealed the role of integrating religion and spirituality to foster a sense of community within their online classes and align with the components of the sense of community framework.
