Counseling Supervisors' Broaching Experiences Addressing Intersectionality of Identity: A Generic Qualitative Study
Alicia Watts
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study explored counseling supervisors' broaching experiences addressing intersectionality with supervisees. Counseling literature has illuminated a need for counselors to broach topics of intersectionality of identity such as race, ethnicity, and culture to demonstrate multicultural competence, increase client disclosure and counselor credibility, enhance the therapeutic alliance, and positively influence the likelihood to return and continue with ongoing and longevity of therapeutic services. Additionally, previous research has found that avoiding, ignoring, or concealing cultural concerns results in negative counseling outcomes, thus, counselors are responsible for assisting clients to explore cultural values, attitudes, beliefs, experiences, and identities within the therapeutic environment. Due to the significance of counseling supervision on the development and growth of counselors-in-training, the practice of broaching has shifted to the focus of supervision, illuminating a recurring and majority inconsistency of willingness and ability to broach with supervisees due to fear and anxiety. This study utilizes a generic qualitative approach to focus on counseling supervisors' perceptions within real world supervisory relationships to understand their experiences broaching intersectionality with supervisees. 10 actively practicing counseling supervisors across the United States voluntarily participated in this study and their experiences analyzed into data. Results found 6 themes of experiential influence, balance, environment, leadership, need for more teaching tools, and never-ending to collectively describe experiences. Implications of this research include how the findings contribute to knowledge within the counseling industry and how future studies may continue to provide advancement of broaching skills and counseling supervision effectiveness.
