Yongxue Xie
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Hofstra University
Despite the increasing enrollment of International Student-Athletes (ISAs) studying and competing in Division I, II, and III institutions in the United States, research studies that focus on investigating ISAs' transitional experiences remain sparse. This study expanded knowledge on ISAs' college experiences by focusing on ISAs' transition in the perspectives of ISAs, the coaching staff, the administrators, and the institutional leaders. A qualitative research method was utilized to conduct this study with a combination of one-on-one interviews and reviewing of documents. Nineteen qualified participants participated in the current study. Participants consisted of ISAs from different countries, leading coaching staff members, and institutional administrators and leaders. The results revealed that the ISAs' transitional experiences and how they cope with transitional challenges are multidimensional. As a result, the coaching staff and athletic department have been found to play a pivotal role in supporting ISAs' transition and overall development. The findings underlined some deficiencies in current institutional resources and services that require institutional leaders' attention for the betterment of future practices. Furthermore, the findings in this study also indicated that ISAs experienced a wide range of challenges during transition, while the utilization of institutional resources remains low due to various factors. It can be concluded that there is a research gap in studying ISAs' transitions. Implications for future research were made in the current research.
