Mental Health Challenges Faced by Black Women in Higher Education Seeking Upward Mobility through Employment
Nicole L. Brock
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of the Cumberlands
The phenomenological methodology employed in this dissertation delves into the intricate interplay between stress, mental health, and socioeconomic mobility among Black individuals in the United States. This study aimed to shed light on the complex difficulties experienced by Black people navigating surroundings, mostly White, in academic and professional settings by combining personal narratives from participant interviews with academic research. The discourse focuses on the effects of financial obligations, high visibility, and discriminatory employment practices, illuminating how these elements affect stress levels and mental health in the Black community. The findings are further contextualized by examining relevant literature on racial disparities, labor market discrimination, and implications for mental health.
