Seeking Belonging: An Exploration of the Lived Experiences of NCAA Division III First-Generation College Student-Athletes
Walter Bissell Horner III
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regis College
This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of first-generation college student-athletes (FGCSA) at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III institutions and how their participation in intercollegiate athletics influenced their sense of belonging. A total of 10 FGCSA participants from three member institutions in an unnamed athletic conference (UAC) in the Northeastern United States were selected to participate in the study. The research process consisted of a pre-qualifying questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and a post-reflective questionnaire designed to empower participants to share their stories and experiences as first-generation student-athletes. Findings helped fill an existing gap in the research on first-generation student-athletes and raise awareness among athletic administrators and coaches about the role that sense of belonging plays in the lived experiences of the FGCSA population.
