The Effects of an Alternative to Suspension Program on Short-Term Behavioral Outcomes in the Secondary Setting
Brett J. Marcum
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
This study examines the impact of an alternative to suspension program on second semester office discipline referrals for participating students. The study compares students who completed the intervention program with those who would have qualified during the school year prior to the program being available at the school district. The study was conducted in a medium sized school district in the Southwestern suburbs of Chicago. The school district, which has been cited by the State Board of Education for overuse of, and disproportionality of, exclusionary discipline has a majority of students of color. The aim of the study was to determine if the alternative to suspension program had a short-term effect on school behaviors and if the intervention provides any opportunity to decrease disproportionality in school discipline. Some contexts of the study make it challenging to offer a conclusive and global determination on the effectiveness of the intervention, but there is an opportunity that similar school districts could utilize the concepts included in the intervention program to inform future efforts to decrease their use of exclusionary discipline practices.
