Helping the School Community Recover from the Pandemic: Supporting Staff, Mental Health, and Families to Accelerate Student Learning. Policy Brief. Best Practices to Accelerate Student Learning Series
National Alliance for Public Charter Schools
The needs of students grew substantially as they experienced nearly two years of disrupted learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount of lost learning time has greatly impacted student achievement, as measured through the National Assessment of Educational Progress--which indicated in the percentages of students scoring in the "below basic" category for math and reading compared to 2019. Through interviews with charter schools, charter associations and authorizers, as well as members of the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition, charter schools leaders identified challenges from the pandemic in the areas of: (1) Academics; (2) Staffing; (3) Mental Health; and (4) Family support and engagement. This policy brief discusses (1) the challenges that schools have faced in each of the four areas; (2) how each of these areas is related to student learning; (3) how the schools that were visited leveraged charter autonomy, flexibility, and adaptability to adopt strategies to address these problems; and (4) how schools are measuring what is working.
