Assessing Challenges Confronted by Urban Black Male Student-Athletes in Grades 9-12
Jack Nelson Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study aims to develop a playbook of best practices for balancing academics and athletics among Black male student-athletes (BMSA), addressing the increasing rates of academic setbacks. A comprehensive review of research data on interventions and programs, including insights from Balfanz et al. (2007), highlights the urgency of this issue. Synthesizing research data and feedback from in-depth interviews, the proposed multifaceted approach prioritizes relationship cultivation, revisiting academic support plans, implementing time management and goal-setting techniques, and establishing mentorship programs. Additionally, potential interventions will address social and emotional needs, including mental health awareness and peer support opportunities. The dissertation emphasizes leadership skills and professional development to empower BMSA both on and off the field. By developing this comprehensive playbook, the study seeks to provide practical solutions for improving the academic and athletic balance for BMSA in grades 9-12. The integration of targeted strategies, such as enhanced academic support, effective time management, and mentorship programs, along with addressing social and emotional needs, aims to foster a supportive environment. Drawing from in-depth interviews as a key reference, this approach will empower BMSA to achieve greater success in both their educational and athletic endeavors, contributing to their overall development and future opportunities.
