Remedying the Cybersecurity Employment Gap -- The Job Seekers' Perspective: A Qualitative Study
Maurice Spates
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capitol Technology University
The cybersecurity talent gap has been a hot topic for most of the 2000s, yet only one aspect or viewpoint of the gap has been investigated: that of the employers. Governmental and private organizations suggest what they think led to or is a contributing factor to the cybersecurity talent gap. This study detailed aspects that could contribute solutions to the talent gap and will provide insight into what the job seekers experienced during their job-seeking journey and explain how these experiences made them feel. The goal of this research was to clarify the current state of research related to the cybersecurity talent gap, identify research gaps, and provide crucial future research directions. Based on a systematic review of hundreds of journal articles from 1885 to 2023, the researcher evaluated the effect that the job-seeking process has on the job seeker, determines what they feel organizations are looking for in a candidate, what is most important to job seekers, and to potentially discovers approaches to help remedy the cybersecurity talent gap. In so doing, the researcher plans to enlighten practitioners and researchers, offer paramount theoretical and practical implications, and suggest productive paths for future research.
