Representation Matters: A Qualitative Narrative Analysis of the Stories of Black Male Teachers in Hispanic Serving School Districts in Southern California

Black and Latina/o communities face both strained multicultural relationships and negative stereotypes in their communities and schools. This research study explored the importance of examining the lived experiences of Black male teachers (BMTs) in Southern California due to the region's diverse racial and ethnic demographics. It is vital to research and understand the experiences of BMTs working within Latina/o communities in order to foster collaboration and promote positive interactions between educators and students from both communities. Findings included the influence of personal experiences and internal motivations on teaching, daily challenges for BMTs, teaching within predominantly Latina/o districts, and the effectiveness of BMTs in Hispanic Serving School Districts (HSSD).
