Exploring Elementary School Teachers' Understandings and Perspectives on Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Policy

The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is one of the six elements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The practice, definition, and intention have been debated throughout its history. This study focuses on the elementary school educators' understanding and perspectives on how LRE affects how they support students with disabilities when LRE malfunctions. The findings support educators' positive mindset in wanting to support these students. However, the teaching credential programs they enrolled in, the insufficient funding for proper staffing, and the implementation of co-teaching models that had seen success are undermining the effort and passion of these educators.
