ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
This study used the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI; Sampson et al., 1996b), Career Decision Making Readiness Scale, (Osborn et al., 2022), the Career Locus of Control Scale (CLCS) (Trice et al., 1989), and the Commitment to Career Choice scale (Blustein et al., 1989) to examine the relationships among dysfunctional career thoughts, career readiness, career locus of control, and career commitment among a population of college student athletes. The sample included current college student athletes (N=97). The CTI was used to measure dysfunctional career thoughts, specifically, decision-making confusion and commitment anxiety. The CDMR scale was used to measure career readiness including capability and complexity. The CLOCS was used to measure internal and external career locus of control. The CCCS was used to measure career choice commitment, specifically vocational exploration and commitment. Pearson's product correlation found both significant and non-significant relations between each of the variables. Multiple regression analyses found significant relationships among all variables except the complexity scale of CDMR. A discussion of the findings is offered, which includes examination of the results and possible limitations. Implications for theory, research, practice, and policy are discussed.
