The photovoice-based action research project took place in a university in Romania during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was aimed to document opportunities and challenges that students with disabilities were faced with in attending emergency remote higher education activities, as well as in returning to face-to-face higher education once restrictions had been lifted. Photovoice methodology was chosen because it allowed for the creation of a dialogic space in which students and researchers could learn from each other and articulate a common agenda for the transformation of educational policies and practices within the university. Photovoice was adapted to facilitate the participation of students with visual disabilities, including students with blindness, as well as students with physical disabilities. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted as part of the project, in order to allow exploring more sensitive questions individually, elaborately and in depth. Special attention was paid to symbolically recognizing the contributions of student participants as coauthors of project works. While awareness-raising materials and policy proposals were coauthored by project participants and the research team, data was analyzed by a team of mostly faculty member researchers. Three coders analyzed the data from both photovoice images and collective reflections, as well as interviews. Dialogue between coders, peer debriefing, and member checking were used as strategies to increase the quality of interpretations. Postgraduate students and researchers seeking to learn about practical strategies of ethically and successfully conducting inclusive participatory visual research in times of crisis may find this case study instructive.
